A Router is an electronic device that used to connects multiple computers, networks together and transmits data to its correct destination using the available path on the network is called router. You can say a router choose the best path for data transfer on available paths.
It store the routing information of each node on the network and to use these information to transfer data between nodes. Like bridge, a router looks at each packets header to determine where the packet should go and then determine a route for the packet to take and reach its destination. Router work at the Network layer of the OSI model (Open System Interconnection).
Router does not support all protocols and some routable protocols include:
IP
IPX
OSI
DDP
DECnet
Protocols NetBEUI and LAT are not routable.
There are two main type of router, static router and Dynamic router. Static router manually setup and configuration by administrator but dynamic router automatically routes its path. Some routers also have built-in antivirus and firewall protection. Similarly, some routers also support wireless communication.
